April 2004: In a few weeks time I will be a father for the first time. I am well over fifty and feel quite ready for the upcoming changes in my life - and the responsibilities that come along with parenthood. Upon reflection, I realize that there are advantages to being a 'late' father. I have learnt many lessons during my 30 years of medical practice. Lessons to do with conceiving a child, guiding a mother safely through pregnancy, the birth process itself and the many obstacles and problems that face a newborn. In this article I want to summarize my most important learnings, so that they may be helpful to people who intend to have a child; those who are already pregnant or those of you with young children.
